LaGrange — Kiwanis Club of LaGrange welcomed nineteen 4-man golf teams to the Mountain View Course at Callaway Gardens on June 8 for its 11th annual golf tournament to benefit area youth through club-sponsored youth programs and college scholarships. Tournament chairman Tim Ellen said the turnout was good for this year’s event, which initiated a new partnership between Kiwanis and First Tee of Troup County. First Tee of Troup County is the newest chapter of the PGA-endorsed national First Tee program, designed to teach young people life goals and character lessons through the sport of golf. Champions Tour player Allen Doyle got involved in the tournament this year, bringing professional support from his endorsing sponsor, Adams Golf, and helping in other areas of the tournament. He couldn't be present at the event, however, since he was in Kansas City to defend a Champions Tour title won in 2004. Allen's daughter, Michelle Doyle, is the executive director of First Tee of Troup County, and she is excited over the partnership with Kiwanis Club of LaGrange. “I think it will be a great fit, with their focus on youth and First Tee’s focus on youth. This (was a) real opportunity for players to go out on a championship course close by, with their friends, and have a lot of fun, while benefiting two great charities.” Kiwanis Club is an international civic organization whose motto is “Young Child-Priority One.” The local club’s golf fundraiser benefits the LaGrange Kiwanis Foundation, which awards general college scholarships to deserving local high school seniors each year to attend the college of their choice, along with a LaGrange College scholarship to a deserving student already enrolled at the local college. The general scholarships are given in memory of Dr. Robert Gordon, and his wife, Buddy. The LaGrange College scholarship is given in memory of one of the LaGrange Kiwanis Club’s charter members, Mr. Ed Gore. Gore was a local businessman and long-time city council member, and was one of the original members of the first Kiwanis Club of LaGrange. Dr. Gordon retired and moved to LaGrange after a distinguished academic career, including serving for many years as a Dean at Notre Dame, and he served on the local Kiwanis Club’s first scholarship committee. His wife, Buddy, was a native of Greenville, and wanted to return to the area when they retired. Ellen, a past President of the local Kiwanis Club, helped found the organization’s golf tournament in 1994, and thought it would be a good way to memorialize his two former colleagues, while raising money for the club’s civic priorities. He was a close friend of both Dr. Gordon and Mr. Gore and served with both for several years in many different Kiwanis community projects. The First Tee is an initiative of the World Golf Foundation, dedicated to providing young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop, through golf and character education, life-enhancing values. The local chapter is coordinated by Troup County Parks & Recreation Commission and headed by Miss Doyle.
